Prepare a gift opening kit

Are you prepared when it comes to gift opening?

To save yourself the stress and the kids having Christmas day meltdowns, make sure you have your kit ready to go…

  1. Scissors and something stronger like wire cutters so that you can get the toys out of the packaging quicker. You know how annoying those little metal ties can be!
  2. Screwdrivers both a Philips and flathead (or better still something like this screwdriver set so all bases are covered!)for putting batteries into toys. If you know there are toys that will need a lot of construction make sure that you have all the tools available.
  3. Batteries have a collection of different sizes. You might not know what other people’s gifts might need. If you use rechargeable batteries, make sure they are charged and ready to use.
  4. File or folder, as gifts get opened pop any instructions or warranties straight into the folder so they don’t get lost in the chaos or accidentally thrown out.
  5. A big box so all the wrapping paper etc can go into the recycling bin easily. If you need to separate the rubbish then have two boxes or as many as you might need. It’s easy to sort as you go rather than doing it later.

How the kids can help out in the kitchen…

Prepare the veg and everything else that can be prepped the day before. Put some Christmas tunes on and get the kids to help. Make it part of the Christmas traditions that will become happy memories when they are older.

For a successful prep session:

🎄Pre-warn the kids, and get them excited about it.

🎄Make a to-do list of everything that needs doing in the session, and put the kids in charge of checking things off.

🎄Assign suitable jobs for the child’s ability, from washing veg to peeling, to chopping, washing up and cleaning up included!

🎄Do it every year so that it becomes a family tradition and as the kids get older they will need less supervision – you are setting yourself up for success in the future.

🎄 Finish up with a family treat, cocoa and Xmas movie?

More jobs the kids can help out with over the holidays…

Help them to feel part of the family and included in the big day prep. Have a big list of jobs you can assign to the kids, assign them according to age and ability. Let them see the list and all the things that need to be done to make it a fun and successful day. Help them feel that they are a part of the planning and implementation.

This doesn’t take away from the special day for them rather it enhances it and will give them a stronger feeling of bonding and belonging.

For general all-year-round jobs, there is a great list and help on how to assign the right job in the ebook in the free resource library (sign up here)
