“Hold up there Jo… Is Star Wars in line with Montessori, which you are always spouting on about?”
That is a great point.
Montessori herself believed kids under the age of six especially, should only be taught about factual things and fantasy/fiction left until they were old enough to understand the difference.
But, we also need to remember that we live in a very different world to the one Montessori knew and so teaching the difference between fact and fiction needs to start earlier. Ideas such as permanency is a difficult concept to grasp and the huge leap in technology in the last 20 years, it makes fantasy and fiction even harder to differentiate.
As parents, we just need to help our kids see what is and isn’t real. When Ebi-kun was little we didn’t buy any character goods such as Thomas, Anpanman, or Peppa Pig mainly because I hate the whole commercial side of the peddling of plastic junk. Star Wars and Lego were our exceptions.
I love Montessori but I’m not a purist and I do believe you can create a balance. There are a lot of things available these days that just weren’t around when Montessori was teaching that can be used as teaching tools.
What I do always do is “Follow The Child” and if your child is excited about something then you can easily combine their interest plus the stage of development they are in, to give them the perfect learning activity. It will have them engaged and they will love it as they are learning new skills. If you want to learn more about Montessori, check out this 101 post.
I originally wrote this post in 2016 and sadly a lot of the places I linked to are no longer available so I have re-organized the post and hopefully now it is a bit easier for you to use too! I have also included some paid activities and resources that we have enjoyed over the years.

If you haven’t heard of TpT yet, you are going to be blown away. It is a platform for teachers to sell the materials they create online. They also have a lot of free resources too. You can sort by age and subject making it easy to find what you are looking for.

Here are a few topics to get you started.

I couldn’t finish this post without sharing our favourite Star Wars books now could I? These two crafts were made from the Star Wars Craft Book by Bonnie Burton. Over the years we have made quite a few things from this book, it gets a big thumbs up from us.

We also love this Star Wars Origami book too, this one is better for older kids or those that are Jedi origami masters! (That is not me, I suck at origami!)

And finally, The Strange Case Of Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger and is a really fun book, great for kids who need a bit of silliness to get them into reading! There are several others in the series now, Ebi-kun says that the Yoda one is still his favourite.
